2016's best NFL draft prospect per Sports Illustrated won't be taken No. 1

The most talented prospect in this year's NFL Draft class likely won't go first or second overall.

The 2016 NFL Draft from Chicago, Il. is excitingly less than one week away, and there is a ton of speculation remaining about just who will be the No. 1 overall pick. Due to some major trades that shook up the draft order — specifically the Los Angeles Rams trading with Tennessee for the No. 1 overall pick, and the Philadelphia Eagles trading up with the Cleveland Browns to get the second spot — we really can only guess who will go No. 1 overall. However, due to the Rams' current quarterback situation — consisting of Case Keenum and Nick Foles, and the Eagles having Sam Bradford and Chase Daniel, it seems likely that QB prospects Jared Goff and Carson Wentz — or vice versa could go No. 1 and 2.

According to Sports Illustrated, however, the 2016 draft class' best overall prospect isn't a quarterback — he isn't even an offensive player. SI claims that the best player in this year's draft class is former Florida State defensive back Jalen Ramsey. Ramsey's versatility and pure ability as a defender — cornerback, safety and even helping at linebacker if need be — is what makes him such an intriguing and lethal prospect.

"He plays like a cornerback, thinks like a safety, hits like a linebacker." SI's Doug Farrar writes. "That's why I think he's the best player in this draft class—he plays multiple positions at a very high level, and those positions are among the most important in the game."

Farrar adds that Ramsey going No. 1 overall "won't happen this year" due to the trades by the Eagles and Rams to get a QB, but it isn't all that surprising that Ramsey checks in at No. 1. Goff and Wentz are indeed talented prospects, but between the three guys, including Ramsey, I'd say without a doubt Ramsey is the most NFL-ready prospect out of this group.
