UAB’s football program has been shut down, effective immediately, and Ray Watts, the school president, met with the team today to tell them. Things did not go well.
One of the football players, Timothy Alexander, live-tweeted the meeting and it was surreal and saddening all at once.
One of UAB’s players stood up and went off on Watts, understandably, to explain the impact this decision has on so many. This Instagram video shows part of the extremely emotional speech.
Alexander continued to tweet about the meeting.
This is an awful situation, and one that affects so many from players to staff to stadium workers and further in the community. The scene at the school was very emotional.
