There's something terrifying about the deep ocean. The way that murky darkness seems to extend beyond any scale we could imagine, obscuring who-knows-what and reaching a depth we haven't even begun to map - it's enough to drive even the hardiest would-be divers back to the safety of the coast.
Luckily for the more thalassophobic among us, games like Subnautica have served as an effective way of confronting our fears by allowing us to explore a (relatively) peaceful underwater setting without fear of something reaching up and grabbing our ankles.
That may change soon, however. According to a Tweet from development studio Unknown Worlds, Subnautica's next big update for PC could introduce some true horror to the virtual experience. Check it out:
Maybe it was too early to grow fearful. The attached video in the Tweet shows off a variety of neat quality-of-life upgrades to the Subnautica experience in addition to some cool little additions, including some new in-game models and an unusual, abandoned lifepod.
If not for the haunting tendrils of a giant squid floating across the player's vision, we could even say that there's nothing to worry about in the vast expanse of Subnautica. The developers left a short note about the unseemly creature on their website:
"Lurking deep within the Primary Containment Facility, a creature of immense proportions awaits. This ancient Sea Emperor Leviathan is the beginning of the end..."
So, you know, that's promising.
