Tom Herman gave a blunt statement on if his team was deserving of a Top 25 ranking

Texas might be quite good this season and there is real talent in Austin.

For a program like Texas, the concept of "rebuilding" is a foreign one. The Longhorns always think they are in the mix as one of the best programs in the country and, based on history, that is a justifiable position.

However, Tom Herman is taking over a program that did not put together a very strong track record under Charlie Strong, including a 5-7 showing during the 2016 season. That hasn't stopped AP voters from installing the Longhorns as a top-25 team but, in speaking to the media on Monday, Herman pushed back on whether his team was deserving of that love.

"No. We're a 5-7 team. You are what your record says you are. We haven't played a game yet. We'll pay attention to those as we head down the stretch, but right now it's just a bunch of people guessing, right?"

This is a very "coach speak" answer from Herman, especially given the sound bye of "you are what your record says you are." Still, this is probably the right way to approach things and it seems safe to assume that Herman is preaching a similar sentiment to his team in an effort to maintain focus and not get ahead of themselves on the field.

Texas might be quite good this season and there is real talent in Austin. Until they show it, though, everything is speculation.
