Scottie Scheffler Credits His Wife Meredith for Breakout Year on the PGA Tour

Scottie Scheffler didn't have the same immediate success that other World Number 1-ranked golfers like Tiger Woods, Rory McIlroy or Dustin Johnson may have experienced. Rather, Scheffler had to battle to get where he is today.

Winning his first Major on the PGA Tour at the 2022 Masters was a moment the 25-year-old would never forget. The Masters, hosted by the Augusta National Golf Club, is not an easy tournament, making the coveted green jacket awarded to the winner of one that signifies elite talent and in the case of Scheffler, a promising career.

But Scottie didn't need a green jacket to know he was a winner. No way. Scottie's wife Meredith did that when the two met as high school sweethearts.

Scottie Scheffler met his wife Meredith Scudder while attending Highland Park High School in Texas, where Scottie played golf and basketball. If that name sounds familiar, it's because it's the same high school that Clayton Kershaw and Matthew Stafford attended.

After graduating, the two kept their relationship strong through long-distance and in-state collegiate rivalry. Scottie had chosen the Longhorn lifestyle, opting to attend the University of Texas while his wife attended Texas A&M. That's how strong their relationship is! Not even college football can tear them apart!

Two years later after graduation, the couple would become engaged, when Scottie got down on one knee during a hike in the Arbor Hills Nature Preserve. Their "Winter Wonderland" wedding was held at Arlington Hall at Turtle Creek Park in Dallas a short six months after Scottie popped the question. Scottie and Meredith Scheffler were now ready to take the world by storm.

The 2022 PGA Tour has been good to the Scheffler's so far. Before accepting his green jacket at Augusta, Scottie won the Phoenix Open, the Arnold Palmer Invitational and the 2022 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play. And despite missing the cut at the PGA Championship, 2022 has been a massive year for the Schefflers and their family as Scottie attributes all of that success to his wife and his faith.

After winning the Master's in 2022, Scheffler spoke of his wife and what she does to support him day in and day out.

"So for me, my identity isn't a golf score. Like Meredith told me this morning, 'If you win this golf tournament today, if you lose this golf tournament by 10 shots, if you never win another golf tournament again' — she goes, 'I'm still going to love you, you're still going to be the same person, Jesus loves you and nothing changes,'" Scottie told reporters after the 2022 Masters. "All I'm trying to do is glorify God and that's why I'm here and that's why I'm in position. So for me, it's not about a golf score."

"I have such a great support system, and I'm so blessed," he said through tears. "I'm so thankful for the sacrifices my support system has had for me in my lifetime, and I'm so glad we could enjoy this moment together."

Scheffler doesn't appear to be slowing down as he movies through the final round of The Open Championship and beyond, but if there was a slow moment, it came during the Par-3 contest where Meredith was his caddie.

"First timers at the Par 3 & it definitely lived up to the hype. Mere is still working on cleaning the grooves..." the Master's champion posted on Instagram.

Fair play, Scottie, but we're sure Mere will get you back for that joke sooner or later.
