Chase Young Gets First Sack, Already Making Impact in 49ers Debut

It didn't take long for Chase Young to make a major impact on the San Francisco 49ers' defense.

Acquired in a trade deadline deal with the Washington Commanders, in exchange for a third-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, Young made his San Francisco debut on Sunday afternoon against the Jacksonville Jaguars and wasted little time making life miserable for Trevor Lawrence.

Playing opposite Nick Bosa, Young recorded his first sack in a 49ers uniform, and his sixth of the season, when he burst off the edge into the Jaguars' backfield and sacked Lawrence while also forcing a fumble.

The 49ers acquired Young to bolster what had already been one of the deepest front-sevens in the NFL, but that had been struggling to generate consistent pressure in recent weeks. Bosa and Young combining for a sack in the first half of their first game as line-mates could be a harbinger of dominance to come for San Francisco.

Combined, Young and Bosa have produced 60 total sacks and 151 quarterback hits throughout their respective careers. Now, they'll spend the foreseeable future racing to the quarterback off opposite edges of the 49ers' defensive line.

Young, chosen by Washington with the No. 2 overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft, has logged 14 career sacks during what has been an injury-riddled first half of his career.

The 49ers will now begin a push for a top seed in the NFC, boasting a defensive line that includes Young, Bosa, Javon Hargrave and Arik Armstead, forming one of the more formidable and disruptive groups in the league.

San Francisco entered Sunday's contest, off the bye week, riding a three-game losing streak and Young was doing his part to turn that tide, defensively, against the Jaguars, who entered Sunday as the hottest team in the NFL. With 9:20 remaining in the second quarter, the 49ers held a 10-0 lead over the Jaguars.
