Eight years after his iconic MLB career came to a close, Red Sox legend David Ortiz managed one more swing and miss at the start of 2024 — although this time, it came during his own child's gender reveal.
On Monday, a video that was initially posted on the Pio Deportes Instagram account showed Ortiz swinging and missing at an under-hand lob his girlfriend threw as part of their gender reveal party. Perhaps Ortiz's girlfriend wasn't familiar with her Hall of Fame boyfriend's game, because she threw the lob high and inside on Ortiz — who was notorious during his 20-season MLB career for liking his pitches low.
Of course, the swing is just a formality. The couple had others waiting nearby with streamers that blasted out light-blue confetti upon Ortiz's swing, indicating that they'd be having a baby boy. Ortiz was clearly able to move on from the embarrassing miss right away, as the ensuing video ends with him celebrating with one of his buddies about the reveal's results.
This newborn boy will be Ortiz's fourth child. His oldest child is a son named David Andres, who lives with his mother in the Dominican Republic. Ortiz's other two children are a 22-year-old daughter named Alexandra and 19-year-old son named D'Angelo. These two kids came from Ortiz's marriage with his now-former wife, Tiffany, to whom he was married from 2002-2023.
Before Monday's botched gender reveal, Ortiz has made recent news for his trolling of New York Yankees legends (and Ortiz's once-bitter rivals) Derek Jeter and Alex Rodriguez, who are part of an "MLB on Fox" broadcast crew with him. Although the MLB season is now in the rearview mirror, one would imagine that both Jeter and Rodriguez will use Monday's gender reveal to get back at Ortiz for the barbs he threw their way during past broadcasts.
Yet, considering that Ortiz's wit seems to be faster than his swing these days, he'll surely have a solid response in store for them.
