Bethesda may be adapting 'Game of Thrones' to video game format

Bethesda's always been known for its expansive, enjoyable RPGs,

It shouldn't come as a surprise that Game of Thrones, as one of the most popular television shows of all time, has already been adapted to video game format a couple of times now - though success in this venture has certainly varied. Cyanide Studio's Game of Thrones in 2012 received fairly mixed reviews for its overall decent story but disappointing combat and design choices, while Telltale Games' episodic Game of Thrones in 2014 suffered from similar criticisms thanks to the studio's notoriously dated engine.

Yet the time might have come for the hit franchise to finally get the development team it deserves. According to a thread on the NeoGAF forums, a page has gone up on Target's website with the heading "Bethesda: Game of Thrones." As of now the page is still up, though no new information has been included.

This isn't the first time one of Bethesda's projects was leaked through an absent-minded retailer. Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus first appeared on a blank Amazon page several days before the game was announced and, similarly to this incident, was also discovered first on NeoGAF.

Concerns have already been raised over whether or not Bethesda has the qualifications to tackle a show like Game of Thrones. Famous for both the Fallout and The Elder Scrolls franchises, Bethesda's certainly not unfamiliar with crafting expansive RPGs, though in recent years the studio's titles have seemingly traded depth for content. Fallout 4, for example, faced criticism for its unremarkable narrative and writing that shifted the series away from the iconic cleverness of its earlier titles, while Skyrim proved that, if nothing else, dragons do not necessarily indicate a powerful story.

Game of Thrones, meanwhile, has been characterized by political intrigue, complicated narratives wound together by equally complex characters, and exciting, cinematic spectacles, and while the latter has somewhat overtaken the former in later seasons as the show winds up for its conclusion, that level of depth has never quite disappeared. Whether or not Bethesda is capable of adapting the compelling nature of Game of Thrones to video game format is (and probably always will be) up for debate.

If we're to follow the precedent set by Wolfenstein 2, then news about Bethesda's possible Game of Thrones IP will likely follow in the coming days. Until then, be sure to keep an ear out for future updates by following the studio on Twitter, where regular announcements are made over new developments and media releases.
