Despite trading for quarterback Alex Smith, the Washington Redskins could franchise tag Kirk Cousins and send him to the highest bidder.
If the Redskins do franchise tag Cousins for the third consecutive year, despite having their franchise quarterback in place, the quarterback is expected to file a grievance to block the tag, per Albert Breer.
Since the rules are designated to buy time in order to work out a long-term deal, Cousins likely has a good shot at winning the grievance should it come to that.
Cousins is expected to be the premier free agent this summer, with the Arizona Cardinals, Denver Broncos, New York Jets and others are expected to toss their hat into the running.
Cousins in a one-time Pro Bowler with more than 16,000 yards thrown over six seasons in Washington. He didn't take over as full-time starter until 2015, where he led the Redskins to a 9-7 record. Over his career, he's tossed 99 touchdowns to 55 interceptions.
He's 26-30-1 over his tenure.
