Oregon Ducks Tight End Spencer Webb Dies After Tragic Fall

University of Oregon tight end Spencer Webb was heading into his fifth year as a projected starter for the Oregon Ducks. With the season coming closer and closer each day, the Oregon football player went to Triangle Lake, located 50 minutes outside of Eugene, to take some time away from preseason prep.

Unfortunately, the 22-year-old Spencer Webb would be involved in a cliff-diving accident that would result in a fatal head injury.

According to the Lane County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to the report of an injured person at the rock slides located west of the lake. Bystanders and paramedics who arrived on the scene were unsuccessful in their attempts to revive the 22-year-old male, largely due to his location after his fall. From the accounts of search and rescue personnel, there was difficulty bringing Webb back to the roadway due to his being "approximately 100 yards down a steep trail."

The Sheriff's office also stated that the incident is a tragic accident, and have not found evidence of foul play, but it is still under investigation.

Since the news broke on Wednesday afternoon, many figures throughout the college football world have shared remembrances and tributes to their friend and teammate after the breaking news of Webb's death on social media.

Oregon head coach Dan Lanning shared his memory of Webb on Twitter. "So full of life in every moment of the day," the Oregon football coach tweeted on Wednesday night. "Your smile and energy will be missed Spencer. I love you!" NFL defensive end Arik Armstead tweeted a video of him and his former teammate saying "Rest easy lil bro @spencer_webb_18. Great young man with a promising future gone too soon."

Spencer "Spider" Webb amassed four touchdowns on 31 receptions in his time on Oregon's football team, which may not seem like a lot. However, it's not what you do on the field that defines you as a person, it's how you change the world off it, that does.

According to the Sacramento Bee, "Webb was more than just a baller. He was a beloved young man, a giver, a motivator, an example of overcoming odds. He was admired by Christian Brothers High School students who appreciated his returns to campus, his alma mater, to talk about the prep journey, of finding your way, and what it means to be a teammate."

May Spencer Webb continue to be an example of what hard work and motivation can do for young players, even after his memory has faded from the history books of the University of Oregon.
