The San Antonio Spurs face an interesting dilemma this offseason. With Tim Duncan on his way out, a spot in the team’s front court could be open in the near future and the Spurs are reportedly targeting one two free agent big men — Portland’s LaMarcus Aldridge or Memphis’ Marc Gasol.
In Marc Stein‘s most recent piece for ESPN, he discussed the possibility of Gasol bolting for the Spurs, but noted widespread expectations across the NBA free agent landscape.
“Yet it’s premature to try to establish the Spurs as some sort of favorite to steal him away, since they’re also widely expected to focus first on the guy perceived as this summer’s more gettable superstar: Portland’s LaMarcus Aldridge.”
Both players would likely fit well in Gregg Popovich’s system, but it’s understandable for San Antonio to chase Aldridge under the assumption that he’s more likely to leave and would be easier to coax into signing with the Spurs.
We’ll certainly have a better grasp of what should happen in the coming weeks.
