Schefter's birth place is Valley Stream, New York. He grew up in the Long Island community of Bellmore, New York, where he attended John F. Kennedy High School. He earned his undergraduate degree at the University of Michigan — where he was an editor for The Michigan Daily — and his graduate degree from Northwestern University's Medill School of Journalism.
The American sportswriter's career began in the Pacific Northwest as an intern for the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. He later moved to Denver, Colorado and wrote for the Rocky Mountain News and The Denver Post. While in Colorado, he covered the Denver Broncos.
The sportscaster used to sub for Woody Paige on ESPN's Around the Horn and also appeared on The Sports Reporters. He did some NFL preseason work with NBC as a sideline reporter in 2008.
Schefter joined the NFL Network team in 2004. His duties included television appearances on NFL Total Access and writing for NFL.com.
Personal Life & Other Ventures
The sports media member met his wife Sharri Maio on a blind date and married her 11 months later. Sharri brought her son Devon from her previous marriage into the new relationship. Her first husband Joe Maio died in the World Trade Center during the 9/11 attacks.
Maio and Schefter have a daughter named Dylan together.
The NFL reporter had a cameo in Adam Sandler's The Longest Yard.

The NFL television analyst officially joined ESPN in 2009. Today, he holds the title of Senior NFL Insider.
Schefter regularly appears to talk pro football on ESPN programs such as SportsCenter, NFL Live, Sunday NFL Countdown, and Monday Night Countdown as well as ESPN Radio shows.
He hosts his own podcast for ESPN audio called The Adam Schefter Podcast. The podcast was formerly called Know Them From Adam: The Adam Schefter Show.
In addition to breaking the latest NFL news to his 8.3 million Twitter followers, Schefter has written several books.

Schefter was voted USA Today's best NFL insider by fans from 2009-11. He was named Sports Illustrated's "Media Person of the Year" in 2014.
Schefter's speed in getting his NFL scoops out to the masses has not always been a simple and blemish-free process. After the untimely death of former-Washington Commanders quarterback Dwayne Haskins, Schefter tweeted the news but added a repugnant descriptor of Haskins' career. "Dwayne Haskins, a standout at Ohio State before struggling to catch on with Washington and Pittsburgh in the NFL, died this morning when he got hit by a car in South Florida, per his agent Cedric Saunders. Haskins would have turned 25 years old on May 3." Schefter has since apologized, but his mentions are still full of Twitter users reminding him of the insensitive comment.
There was also the incident in which e-mails between Schefter and a former executive from the Washinton Commanders organization were uncovered by the Los Angeles Times, in which Schefter appears to give the executive the opportunity to edit a story about the team that the ESPN writer was planning on running. "Please let me know if you see anything that should be added, changed, tweaked," Schefter wrote in an e-mail. He then added, "Thanks, Mr. Editor, for that and the trust. Plan to file this to espn about 6 am." Not a great look, and Schefter was also forced to apologize for this ethical breach.
