Steve Young was born in Salt Lake City, Utah. His father landed a job in New York when Steve was growing up, and the family moved to the East Coast. Young attended high school at Greenwich High School in Greenwich, Connecticut, and played for the Cardinals' football team.
During his childhood, Young grew up admiring Dallas Cowboys quarterback Roger Staubach, even having a poster of the star QB on his bedroom wall.
Young, a practicing Mormon, is the great-great-great grandson to Brigham Young, founder of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
Due to his connection to Brigham Young, Steve decided to play football at BYU, where he played quarterback for the program's football team.

Steve Young was the first-overall pick in both the 1984 Supplemental NFL Draft, as well as the 1984 United States Football League Draft.
To the surprise of many, Young signed an absurd 43-year, $40 million deal with the Los Angeles Express of the USFL, despite having been selected by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as well.
The USFL became defunct just two years later, at which point Young made the move to the National Football League where he served as the Bucs' QB.
Young started 19 games for the Buccaneers from 1985-86, recording a dismal 3-16 record before parting ways with the team. He was scooped up by the 49ers, backing up Joe Montana for five seasons. While a passer for the 49ers, Young played under general manager Bill Walsh.
After becoming the starter midway through the 1991 season, Young made seven consecutive Pro Bowls and three First-Team All-Pro selections. He won the Most Valuable Player award in 1992 and 1994 and won his third championship at Super Bowl XXIX in 1994 when the Niners defeated the San Diego Chargers.
His first two rings were won while he was still backing up Montana. Young never made it back to the Super Bowl following the 1994 season, having been ousted in the playoffs multiple times by Brett Favre and the Green Bay Packers.
Young retired as an NFL player in 1999, and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2005. His father, LeGrande "Grit" Young, gave his speech at the induction ceremony.
Across Young's 15-year career as an NFL quarterback he threw 232 touchdowns to 107 interceptions and rushed for an additional 43 TDs.

Steve Young got married after he retired his career as a football player concluded, finally settling down with his wife Barbara Graham. The couple married in 2000 and have three children, daughter Summer and sons Jackson and Braden.
Following his NFL career, Young co-founded a private equity firm alongside billionaire Jon Huntsman and Robert Gay in 2007. He also made various cameo appearances in television shows such as 90210, Beverly Hill, Wings and Dharma and Greg. He has also served as an analyst for ESPN's Monday Night Football.
