The Houston Texans released immature quarterback Ryan Mallett Tuesday afternoon after a handful of transgressions put him in the negative spotlight.
As a free agent, Mallett and his big arm will have his choice of where he lands.
Here are the top five logical destinations:
1. San Francisco 49ers
Colin Kaepernick could be on his way out after what has quickly become a disaster of a season. San Francisco has the pieces in place with a steady running back in Carlos Hyde and two legit downfield options in Anquan Boldin and Torrey Smith. All they’re missing is a quarterback to sling the ball around, and Mallett has proven he can do that.
2. Cleveland Browns
Josh McCown isn’t the longterm option in Cleveland and Johnny Manziel has had his fair share of off- and onfield issues. Mallett wants to win, but can he be the one to resurrect the Browns after so many quarterbacks before him attempted to do the same?
3. Denver Broncos
Is Brock Osweiler the successor to Peyton Manning? No one is certain, but it’s looking more and more like this is Manning’s last season. Mallett has some growing up to do, and he evidently didn’t do that behind Tom Brady in New England. Denver is built for success and the big-armed Mallett could be an ideal fit moving forward.
4. Washington Redskins
Kirk Cousins is about as up-and-down as you get at the quarterback position, Robert Griffin III appears destined for a home elsewhere and Mallett could step in as the next starter in the dysfunctional organization.
5. New York Jets
Ryan Fitzpatrick isn’t the longterm option and Geno Smith appears out of favor in New York. Mallett has had maturity issues, but has flashed the talent needed to be a success story in this league.
