The Patriots may need to sign another quarterback if Tom Brady is suspended

The New England Patriots — and really the entire football world — is waiting to find out what Tom Brady's suspension from the DeflateGate debacle may be. There have been reports that Brady could be suspended for the entire season or possibly just a few games, but it seems as though some form of suspension is going to be handed down in the near future.

What that means for the Patriots is that they will have just Jimmy Garoppolo and Garrett Gilbert as the only two quarterbacks on the roster unless they make a signing. Garoppolo would be the starter on opening night when they face the Steelers if the Pats stay with the roster as constructed, but there's speculation that they will want to bring in a veteran signal-caller to compete for the starting job if Brady is out for a significant amount of time.

ESPN Boston's Mike Reiss threw out the idea of the Patriots going after Matt Flynn — long-time Packers backup who had brief stints in Seattle and Oakland — in free agency, while there are other free agent quarterback options including Michael Vick. It will be very interesting to see how the Patriots approach this once a decision is made by the league as to what Brady's punishment — if any — will be.

If Brady is out for the entire season, the best option might be giving Garoppolo the reigns and letting him see what he can do as they'll want to know if they have a potential future successor for Brady. If Tom is only going to miss a few games, bringing in a veteran that may be better suited to win now and hold things in place until Brady returns might be the best option.
