WASHINGTON, DC - AUGUST 03: U.S. President Barack Obama addresses the Presidential Summit of the Mandela Washington Fellowship for Young African Leaders at the Omni Shoreham Hotel August 3, 2016 in Washington, DC. As part of Obama's Young African Leaders Initiative, the summit brought together 1000 leaders, ages 25-35, from across Africa to the U.S. for 6 weeks of leadership training and mentoring at twenty universities and colleges to 'spur growth and prosperity, strengthen democratic governance, and enhance peace and security across Africa.' This retired NBA superstar actually said no to the President, and that's a power move

You can't peer pressure him into doing anything he doesn't want to.

It's not all too often that people get invited to go places with the President of the United States. That's especially true when he's going to check out the athletes representing the country he governs in the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. However, he did extend an invitation to one recently retired baller according to Sports Illustrated's Deantae Prince.

RELATED: Tim Duncan calls it a career

In the SI story, former San Antonio Spurs teammate Bruce Bowen said that Duncan turned down a direct invitation from the President:

Tim, his legacy is always going to be more of the foundation guy in San Antonio and a guy that wasn't ever concerned with the limelight, but more importantly concerned with others, making sure that they could really reach the most out of their potential.

It's not often you find individuals like that. And it's funny that he was offered an opportunity to fly here with the president of the United States, and he discussed it with me and I'm like, "You're going, right?" He was like, "You know I'm not about that stuff." Even that moment where you'd say, "I sure would like to be a part of that," it doesn't happen with Tim because he's not concerned with that stuff.

It would have been pretty cool to see Duncan in the stands watching his teammates for the last time in Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Patty Mills all competing for their respective countries. We can't always get what we want though and Duncan is comfortable enough in his own skin not to have felt pressured to go with Obama and that makes this the ultimate humble brag.
