When Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback DeShone Kizer won the starting job over Brock Osweiler, it was assumed that Osweiler would be the No. 2 QB on the depth chart.
According to head coach Hue Jackson, that might not be the case. Jackson told reporters on Monday he hasn’t decided who the primary backup will be for Kizer.
“I have not decided that yet,” Jackson said.
Cody Kessler, who started eight games last season, could be the backup QB. Osweiler is set to make $16 million this season, so it’s possible the Browns could trade or release him, though Jackson didn’t discuss any rumors on Monday.
“Honestly, I haven’t heard any of those rumors,” Jackson said. “I don’t have time to look at papers or follow rumors, and no one has brought that to me. I don’t know anything about that.”
It’s unlikely a team will be willing to trade for Osweiler’s salary unless the Browns throw in a draft pick or two, similar to what the Houston Texans did to unload Osweiler on Cleveland.
A release is far more likely considering the season is about to start. Either way, the Browns feel like they’ve found their QB, and it’s not Brock Osweiler.
