Nothing concrete has happened yet, but a major hurdle for a much speculated boxing match between UFC lightweight champ Conor McGregor and undefeated boxer Floyd Mayweather was cleared on Wednesday, as McGregor was issued a professional boxing license in the state of California.

Mayweather and McGregor have both teased a superfight, but nothing beyond speculation has surfaced on if they two could actually square off in a boxing match. McGregor getting boxing license doesn’t mean that the fight is happening, but it is definitely a step in the process towards that actually happening.

The move could also be McGregor posturing against the UFC, who recently stripped him of the featherweight title that McGregor had not defender in a year.

McGregor has proven to be one of the biggest draws in UFC history with his performances over the past two years, and Mayweather is one of the biggest draws in the boxing industry. A superfight between the two would likely bring in a lot of money, and it would be very intriguing; McGregor has proven to be one of the best standup performers in UFC, and it would be interesting to see if his game could hold up to a professional boxer on the caliber of Mayweather.
