Georgia legislature passes potential law change to help in-state recruiting

This is a weird proposal of the state of Georgia.

Kirby Smart has made quite an impact in his first few months as Georgia's head coach, something that was expected after taking over for Mark Richt. It appears that Smart is going a step further now, as he is apparently pushing for the state legislature to change a law in order to help in-state recruiting.

According to Yahoo, state lawmaker Earl Ehrhart is proposes a bill that would give athletic departments within the state more time to respond to Freedom of Information Act (FIOA) requests. The proposal was made with input from Smart, and it would be raising the current response time three days to 90 days.

How would this help with recruiting? Apparently the University of Georgia get slammed with FOIA requests related to recruiting, specifically with regards to uncovering recruiting and coaching visits. By raising the response time to 90 days, schools in-state would be have to keep more visits a bit of a secret, thus giving them more of an advantage in recruiting than they currently have.

According to Yahoo, the proposal is an amendment to Georgia Senate Bill 323, which has been passed by both parts of the Georgia legislature. The bill is currently awaiting the approval of Georgia Governor Nathan Deal.
