The 2016 season has driven that point home, as Michigan's do-everything superstar is garnering legitimate Heisman Trophy buzz despite spending the great majority of his playing time on the defensive side of the ball. However, it is possible that Peppers isn't even the best defensive player on his own team.
The Wolverines are utterly loaded on the defensive line but, in fact, All-American cornerback Jourdan Lewis has been the most dominant player since returning from an early season injury.
Yes, you read that correctly. Jourdan Lewis has allowed a 0.0 quarterback rating this season.
That seems impossible, but it isn't. In addition, only Colorado quarterback Seth Liufau has strung together even a reasonable performance against Michigan's secondary this season and much of that has to do with the fact that Lewis is effectively taking away half of the field as a shut-down cornerback.
It isn't that surprising to think that Lewis, who was arguably the best player at the position in the country in 2015, could be fantastic but he is currently surpassing any reasonable expectation. The schedule will become more difficult down the line, with a trip to Columbus looming at the end of the campaign. Until he allows something positive through the air, though, it is probably fair to say that Jourdan Lewis is the best cornerback in college football.
