The Baylor Bears are a mess right now, to the point where the university reportedly low-balled SMU head coach Chad Morris with an offer that he couldn't reasonably accept to be the new head coach in Waco. However, an interesting name has emerged with regard to the Baylor coaching search and that name is California head coach Sonny Dykes.

Mark Schlabach of ESPN brings word that SMU will "focus their search" on Dykes, who has extensive ties to the state of Texas. In addition, Schlabach reports that Dykes could be a candidate to replace Tom Herman at Houston, because of those same ties and SMU is working with Morris on a new contract to reward him for loyalty and performance.
Dykes has come under some fire at Cal after a season in which the Bears ranked last in FBS in points allowed per game, but there is no question that his high-powered offense would mirror Baylor's on-field brand from recent years. At this point, it is far too early to start making plans as if Sonny Dykes will be the next head coach at Baylor (especially given the fact that Schlabach reports other candidates including Mike Singletary), but there is plenty of smoke surrounding this potential marriage.
Regardless of what happens, Baylor would be wise to land a head coach sooner rather than later, and it might be Sonny Dykes.
