Shocking names mentioned in search for new Minnesota coach

This might take some luck to make happen.

The Minnesota head coaching search should be an interesting one after the school fired head coach Tracy Claeys. The market is almost dry with it being this late in the season, and Minnesota will have to be creative with their options.

However, it looks like they plan to do everything they can, as the The chairman of the Minnesota's board of regents David Johnson mentioned Texas A&M head coach Kevin Sumlin as a name that the school would like to target, as well as now free agent Chip Kelly.

"There's all kinds of names, you know, from Chip Kelly and Sumlin and P.J. Fleck," Johnson said in an interview with ESPN radio "The list goes on and on."

Sumlin is currently facing his own hot seat in College Station, but it looks like the school is on board with him continuing into the 2017 season. Sumlin is also one of the highest-paid coaches in college football, so he really has no incentive to leave Texas A&M unless forced out.

Even though Chip Kelly is on a bit of a downswing following some failed tenure in the NFL, he is still a highly sought name in the college coaching ranks. There are a lot of job that Kelly could take if they opened, and he many not want to commit himself to a mid-level job like Minnesota.

Among other things, Minnesota isn't exactly a fun situation for whomever may be the next head coach.

While Minnesota may have some lofty goals for whom they would like to be their next head coach, they may be reaching a little too high right now with the names they realistically think they can land after firing Claeys following a 9-4 season and some turmoil within the program.
