Customization system revealed for upcoming Need for Speed: Payback

A new video displays the many customization options in Payback.

Customization is the name of the game when it comes to a player's online experience. There's no greater hook than a shiny new cosmetic item dangled on a figurative string; it promises flair and bragging rights, the ability to wave your newly-acquired attire in front of your fellow players as a child would an ice cream cone - until the game's next update brings even more content, thus starting the cycle all over again.

The developers over at Ghost Games just released a trailer for Need for Speed: Payback that demonstrates their awareness of this principle. Check it out:

Cars will be the centerpiece of Payback's customization system (who could have guessed?) and as such, there will be a variety of methods to obtaining different appearances. Players who win races will earn one of three randomly selected upgrades for their vehicle. These upgrades can also be found at in-game tuning shops, which will increase your car's max speed, acceleration, brakes, and much, much more.

The real innovation however comes from the game's new Derelict system. According to a post on Electronic Arts' website, players will be able to discover scrap vehicles and build them up by finding various parts around the map. Once the player has gathered enough pieces, they can then create a functioning, drivable car - with a bonus.

"Unlike regular cars, Derelicts have the ability to be each and every car class available. Ever wanted to turn a Chevrolet Bel Air into a off-road racing monsters? Well now's your chance, but choose wisely, once your decision has been made there's no going back."

This newly refurbished car can be upgraded even further, eventually turning into a "Super Build" after reaching Tier 3.

Via EA's website.

Super Builds will unlock "more extreme visual customization, turning what was once a piece of scrap into an absolute beast." Despite being locked to the class the player chose, unlocked cars can be found at a car dealer, purchased, and re-customized to the player's preference.

Need for Speed: Payback will launch on November 10, 2017 for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via the Origin retail client.
