The Philadelphia Eagles released former first-round pick Marcus Smith on Wednesday prior to the completion of his rookie contract, according to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer.

According to McLane, the move took place days before the Eagles would have paid Smith a $594,000 roster bonus.
Smith, who was selected No. 26 overall in the 2014 NFL Draft, appeared in 37 games and made zero starts in three seasons, recording 23 tackles and four sacks.
Philadelphia selected Derek Barnett in the first-round of the 2017 NFL Draft and signed veteran Chris Long this offseason, which made it clear that the plan was to move on from Smith at defensive end.
