During his speech, Valvano announced the creation of the V Foundation for Cancer Research, which has since donated over $130 million to cancer research related projects. Valvano also exclaimed the now famous "Don't give up... don't EVER give up". Valvano would pass away just eight weeks later.
In 2007, ESPN and the ESPYs began awarding the Jimmy V Award for perseverance. Past recipients include Kay Yow, George Karl, and Stuart Scott.
Tonight, Cincinnati Bengals defensive lineman Devon Still will be accepting the 2015 Jimmy V Award on behalf of his daughter, Leah. The five-year old Leah has had a well documented bout with Neuroblastoma stage 4 cancer. Leah had the tumor removed back in March and was finally released from the hospital a few weeks ago, but her immune system is still not healthy enough for her to travel with her father to accept the award.
