The Michigan Wolverines are, unquestionably, one of the great programs in the history of college football.

As of the end of the 2014 season, Michigan ranks first in all-time wins and second (trailing only Notre Dame) in all-time winning percentage among collegiate programs. Beyond that, the Wolverines claim 11 national championships, and there is no doubt that some of the best teams of all-time have resided in Ann Arbor.
Matt Brown of Sports on Earth unveiled his listing of the top 100 college football teams ever on Wednesday, and Michigan was represented with 10 squads. That means 10 percent of the best college football teams of all-time wore maize and blue. No other program can match that (Alabama was next with nine).
The 1964 (100th), 1944 (t90th), 1933 (88th), 1976 (83rd), 1946 (75th), 1943 (29th), 1973 (23rd), 1940 (21st), 1948 (18th) and 1947 (9th) squads made the list and, interestingly, only three of those teams (1933, 1947, 1948) won national titles. Perhaps the biggest omission from the list is the 1997 edition of the Wolverines, who were led by Heisman Trophy winner Charles Woodson and shared the national title with Nebraska.
Beyond the top 100 list, Sports on Earth also anointed "best of" lists, and Michigan's 1985 defense was listed as the second-best defensive unit of all-time, trailing only the 1952 USC Trojans. The 1985 team was featured as a squad that "just missed the cut" from the top 100 list.
This is, of course, only one outlet's opinion of the best teams ever assembled, but it is a powerful reminder of Michigan's tremendous history.
