Agent: Saints RB Alvin Kamara Leaves Camp Over Contract

New Orleans Saints running back Alvin Kamara was a notable absence from minicamp and his agent said that's by design. It seems Kamara wants a new deal.

He has two years left on his current contract. But hey, why honor that when there's more cash to be had?

"He was here for walkthrough this morning," head coach Dennis Allen told NFL reporters, "and then he went in, and I haven't had a chance to talk to him, so I'm not sure why he wasn't out there for the rest of practice."

Kamara signed a five-year, $75 million extension in 2020.

"His upcoming cap hits are $18.5 million in 2024 and $29 million in 2025, according to Spotrac,' via CBS Sports. "Per NFL Media, the Saints and Kamara have been discussing a contract restructure for months now, but the two sides haven't made progress recently."

As CBS also noted, Kamara is coming off his worst season statistically. So this may not be the best time for him to negotiate.

Kamara "rushed for a career-low 694 yards and five touchdowns in 13 games played. He also caught 75 passes for 466 yards and one touchdown," Jordan Dajani of CBS wrote. "Kamara averaged 4.5 yards per touch in 2023, which was the lowest of his career."

The Saints finished 9-8 last season, tied with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC South, but placed second in the division via a tiebreaker. They open the season Sept. 8 at home against the Carolina Panthers.

We can all assume Kamara will be there by then, but it's still too early to say whether he'll get the contract extension he seeks.
