Prior to June 19, the Mariners led the American League West division by 10.5 games; however, since then the team has gone on to struggle, as they have now lost eight out of their last nine games. To note, the Mariners currently have a 64-64 record, sitting 5.0 games back from the Houston Astros in the standings.
Even with having one of the best pitching staffs in the Major Leagues, the team has not been able to get much run support. To emphasize, the Mariners currently have put up a 3.53 ERA this season, which leads the MLB; nevertheless, they also have the worst batting average in the league (.216).
The team's pitching rotation includes notable aces: Luis Castillo (3.51 ERA), Logan Gilbert (3.21 ERA), George Kirby (3.40 ERA), Bryce Miller (3.32 ERA), and Bryan Woo (2.12 ERA).
To point out, the Mariners have the capability to make a late season run, as they are led by star outfielders Julio Rodriguez and newly acquired Randy Arozarena.
In addition, looking ahead to the future, there is an array of young up-and-coming talent on the roster, such as Cal Raleigh (Catcher), Luke Raley (OF), Victor Robles (OF), and Dominic Canzone (OF), who have each shown flashes of big league success.
Ultimately, the Mariners front office released a statement announcing their decision to promote Dan Wilson to be the 21st manager in club history. Despite having no previous managerial experience, Wilson played for the team from 1994-2005.
Hopefully the late year change will incite energy back into the team's clubhouse down the stretch, so they can turn things back around in hopes of making a postseason push, before it's too late.
