In particular, the deal includes $231 million in guaranteed money, as reported by ESPN's Adam Schefter.
A deadline deal: Hours before Dallas kicked off its season, it reached agreement with QB Dak Prescott on a four-year contract, $240 million extension that will make him the highest-paid player in NFL history and keep him in a Cowboys uniform for seasons to come, per sources. pic.twitter.com/ZsQmwcuoNA

Heading into his ninth year in the NFL, 31-year-old Prescott was entering into the final year of his current deal, which was supposedly going to make this upcoming 2024 season a contract year.
To point out, this comes off the heels of GM/team owner Jerry Jones and the Cowboys paying superstar wide receiver CeeDee Lamb, who came to agreement on a four-year extension worth up to $136 million last month, after holding out all summer.
So the contract extensions for Dak Prescott (four years, $240 million) and CeeDee Lamb (four years, $136 million) end up exactly where everyone, everywhere knew they would end up back in March.

In view of Prescott's on-the-field play, since being drafted in the fourth round of the 2016 NFL Draft, he has accumulated 29,459 yards, including 202 touchdowns and 74 interceptions with a 67% completion rate and a career quarterback rating of 99.0.
All in all, this deal may come as a surprise for some fans, considering Prescott has drawn criticism mainly for his postseason performances in years past, as he has a career 2-5 postseason record.
With Dak Prescott leading my team, we were down 27-0 as the 2 seed in a home playoff game the last time the Dallas Cowboys played. Dak's reward: biggest contract in NFL history.

Now that both the team's star quarterback and wide receiver have been signed, the Cowboys will not have any distractions heading into Cleveland to take on the Browns at 4:25 pm ET in the season opener.
