Dolphins fans are fired up for return of throwback uniforms

The Miami Dolphins host the Buffalo Bills on Thursday night (8:15 p.m. ET on Prime Video), and the team will do so while wearing throwback uniforms. This is a choice that fires up fans of the NFL franchise.

The uniforms in question feature aqua jerseys, white helmets with the classic Dolphins logo, and white pants with aqua and orange stripes. Thursday's game marks the first of two times that the team will use throwback uniforms. The second will be on Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 28, when the Dolphins don all-white uniforms for a game against the Packers.

"Love the throwbacks," one fan posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. Many others weighed in and agreed, voicing their support for the classic look and the dolphin wearing a helmet.

Versions of these uniforms have been used by the team for decades, but they have been pushed to the side in recent seasons. They only return in select games. For example, the Dolphins wore the throwback aqua jerseys in December 2023 while defeating the Cowboys 22-20.

Dolphins fans want this to change. They want to see the team bring back the uniform worn by iconic players throughout the team's history. After all, this is the uniform the team wore during its undefeated season in 1972.

"Should've never changed it to begin with, iconic franchises don't change iconic uniforms... all for an alternate that pushes the envelope but the main uniforms should remain timeless," one fan posted on X.

"On behalf of The Dolphin nation, we beg you to give us our iconic looks back permanently," another fan posted.

"It's been long enough and the majority of fans want it, so give the people what they want! GO PHINS!"

The calls for permanent throwbacks stem from a major change made in May 2013. This is when the Dolphins unveiled their new uniforms and logos as part of a partnership with Nike. Gone was the dolphin wearing a helmet. In its place was a redesigned, "sleeker" Dolphin.

The Dolphins went 8-8 in the first season with the new Nike uniforms. The team has since gone on to post double-digit wins three times (2016, 2020, and 2023) while making the playoffs three times (2016, 2022, and 2023). The team has not moved beyond the Wild Card round in any of these appearances.

The lack of playoff wins has called for some fans to call for the Dolphins to get rid of these Nike uniforms. Some feel the new looks could be considered cursed. Others just want to see their favorite uniforms on display each and every week of the season.

Thursday's game against the rival Bills is another opportunity for the Dolphins to continue on the path back to the postseason. The team is already 1-0 after taking down the Jaguars. Now they will attempt to beat the Bills for the second time in a stretch of 13 games.

If they can achieve this goal in the throwback uniforms, the fans will leave Hard Rock Stadium riding high.
