Cup Roval starting lineup: Shane van Gisbergen wins pole

CONCORD, N.C. — Shane van Gisbergen will lead the field to the green flag for Sunday's Cup Series race at the Charlotte Roval.

Van Gisbergen, who won the pole for Saturday's Xfinity Series race as well, posted the fastest lap at 82.704 seconds. This is his first career Cup Series pole win in his 12th start.

Tyler Reddick qualified second with a lap of 82.761 seconds. AJ Allmendinger qualified third with a lap of 83.015 seconds shortly after he qualified third for the Xfinity Series race.

Other drivers in the top 10 were Joey Logano (83.166 seconds), Austin Cindric (83.262 seconds), Kyle Larson (83.330 seconds), Chase Elliott (83.424 seconds), Brad Keselowski (83.465 seconds), Bubba Wallace (83.568 seconds), and William Byron (83.614 seconds).

Multiple playoff drivers missed the final round of qualifying. This includes Christopher Bell, who qualified 12th with a lap of 83.241 seconds, and Ryan Blaney, who qualified 14th with a lap of 83.360 seconds.

Other playoff drivers outside of the top 10 were Daniel Suarez in 13th (83.367 seconds), Alex Bowman in 17th (83.370 seconds), Denny Hamlin in 18th (83.607 seconds), and Chase Briscoe in 25th (83.766 seconds).

Briscoe will start the race in the worst position considering that he is last in the playoff standings. He is 32 points below the cutline and in a must-win position. Scoring stage points won't necessarily help him overcome this deficit.

"I think for us it's honestly better that we're kind of in the position that we are being 32 out or whatever it is versus 15 just because if you're 15 to even 20, that is doable," Briscoe said Saturday at the Roval.

"Where we're 30, at least for us, we're just looking at it as a must-win. You could maybe point your way in, but a lot of things would have to go your way."

The command to fire engines will take place at 2:26 p.m. ET on Sunday. Carl Edwards and Ricky Rudd will be the grand marshals. Greg Biffle will wave the green flag to start the playoff race at 2:38 p.m. ET.
