Damar Hamlin Nearly Passed Away After On-Field Collapse

One of the reasons that fans were particularly concerned by Harrison's collapse is because it nearly mirrored the situation where Bills safety Damar Hamlin nearly passed away.

During a 2023 matchup with the Cincinnati Bengals wide receiver Tee Higgins caught a pass in the open field. When Hamlin tried to tackle him, Higgins' shoulder made contact with Hamlin's chest causing the Bills' safety to collapse on the field.

Hamlin was on the ground — not moving. Paramedics and other first responders rushed to the field to administer CPR to theBills's safety.

They performed CPR for a significant amount of time before the ambulance arrived to take Hamlin off the field and to the hospital. After the game, the Bills revealed that Hamlin had suffered cardiac arrest and it was the paramedics who restored his heartbeat on the field.

In his ESPY Award speech, Hamlin paid homage to the first responders who saved his life.

"When the Bills trainers got to me on that field, I'm not sure what my odds of survival were. But I do know that the staff that worked on me had to do everything just right," Hamlin said.

"And thanks to their training, their poise, their commitment to serving others, the Bills' training staff kept me alive."
