Videos surfaced showing Jacksonville police officers involved in heated altercations with fans in the stands, sparking an immediate reaction from the community — and now, an official review from the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
Jacksonville Mayor Donna Deegan weighed in quickly, posting on X that she had spoken with Sheriff T.K. Waters about what she described as "disturbing" footage. She emphasized that they're awaiting the investigation's findings.
Meanwhile, the Sheriff's Office's Professional Standards Division confirmed it is aware of the videos and has opened administrative reviews, but they're holding off on any comments until the facts are sorted.
"The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office's Professional Standards Division is aware of the videos circulating from the Georgia-Florida football game. Administrative reviews of the incidents are being opened. As such, the agency will not comment until all facts are known and the reviews have been completed," the office said.
One video shows two officers wrestling with a pair of fans, while onlookers urge the police to back off. In another, a verbal spat between a fan and officers escalated fast, ending with the fan bloodied, handcuffed, and tased multiple times.
But here's the kicker — neither video captures the events leading up to these confrontations. So, the circumstances? Still a bit of a mystery.
That leaves a lot of people asking questions about what sparked these incidents and whether the officers' response was justified or over the top. In most instances, officers don't take down people who comply. A complete lack of compliance is generally what leads to these ugly confrontations.
Either way, it's clear the city and fans alike are going to be watching closely to see how the Sheriff's Office handles this one. For now, all eyes are on the investigation and whether it will deliver the answers everyone's waiting for.
