Ball Lets Anti-Gay Slur Slip Out During Postgame Interview
Following the Hornets' narrow 115-114 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks, Ball was asked about the team's defensive strategy against Giannis Antetokounmpo on the last play of the game. He dropped in an anti-gay slur while delivering his answer and has drawn criticism since from league officials and fans alike.
Head coach Charles Lee apologized on behalf of his team and their star player shortly after the league made its announcement. Lee says he spoke with Ball about the incident and claims that he "understands what's going to be expected of him."
As an organization that is obviously not something we condone," Lee told reporters. "Our standards and what is required of our players in the environment we create is really important to us.
"I spoke to 'Melo and he's obviously very apologetic. From what I've seen since I've been around him, he loves everyone. He's a joy to have around the facility and it's not typically how he operates. He and I talked about the seriousness of the situation and how he needs to conduct himself going forward."
Ball issued his own apology after the Hornets lost 128-114 to the unbeaten Cavaliers, asserting that he "really didn't mean anything (by it)" and had no intention of offending anybody.
Time will tell if the youngest Ball brother is honest in his convictions.
