Chiefs head coach Andy Reid spoke on Tuesday about Mahomes' status, stressing that the team's plan is for the reigning Super Bowl MVP to practice in a "lighter" capacity as they assess his recovery.
"Let's just see what he does, how he does, feels. He's always honest with me, he's gonna shoot me straight on it," Reid said at his press conference.
Reid made it clear that the Chiefs aren't factoring the short turnaround from Saturday's game to their Christmas matchup against the Steelers into the equation.
"If he can go, he'll go. If he can't, then he can't. It's that simple," Reid told reporters. "I'll just take it day by day and see how he does."
While the Chiefs wait for more information in the coming days, Mahomes' status could stretch into the weekend. If he's unable to play, Reid isn't concerned about his backup's ability to lead the team.
Wentz, who replaced Mahomes during Sunday's win over Cleveland, has the full confidence of his coaches and teammates.
"He's started in the league and been successful," Reid said. "He's got a great feel for this offense. Very smart, big arm, I like the way he carries himself, I like everything about him. He should be starting in this league somewhere. He's a heck of a player."
Wentz, once seen as a future star with the Eagles, hasn't quite reached that elite level in recent years, but Reid's confidence is evident.
"If it comes down to Carson, I'm confident we can win with him," Reid added.
But for now, it's still all about Mahomes and whether he can go on Saturday. Chiefs fans will be holding their breath until the decision is made.
