Garrett Wilson sparks fear of Jets exit with postgame comments

Garrett Wilson has two games remaining in the 2024 NFL season. The fans are now worried that these could be his final games in a New York Jets uniform based on his demeanor and comments after a 19-9 loss.

Wilson caught six passes for 54 yards against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday afternoon, primarily late in the game. Quarterback Aaron Rodgers focused more on Davante Adams (68 yards and a touchdown) and Tyler Conklin (59 yards) early.

When asked about the lack of use, Wilson took a few moments before delivering an answer.

"I just gotta go out and put my best foot forward," Wilson told reporters after the game. "I would love to be involved, love to make an impact on the game but if people see it differently, then that's out of my control. Just try and do what I can do."

Wilson did not specifically call for another team to come get him; he kept his answer professional. The fans, however, saw different meanings behind his comments.

"He's so gone the minute he is a free agent," one person posted on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. Many others weighed in with similar comments about Wilson's future. Not many expressed the opinion that he will return in 2025.

"What an epic fail by the Jets. Best player you drafted in years and you're pushing him out," another fan added on X.

Wilson, the 10th overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft, currently suits up on his rookie contract. This four-year deal is worth $20,554,006.

One year remains on Wilson's rookie deal. The Jets will owe him $1,100,000 in 2025, as well as a $2,407,819 roster bonus. The Jets also have a fifth-year option they can use to keep Wilson in the building for the 2026 season.

Will the team and wide receiver reach this point? That question will remain unanswered for several months, but the Jets won't have any reason to release or trade Wilson.

After all, he will only count $6,539,911 against the salary cap, per Spotrac. He has also proven to be a dynamic player — provided he receives targets. He topped 1,100 yards as a rookie in 2022 and then surpassed 1,000 last season. Wilson is now 13 yards shy of 1,000 once again.

Another team would have to come to the Jets with a strong offer to wrangle Wilson away from the AFC East team. This is something the Jets fans don't want to see, but fans of other teams made it clear they would like to see Wilson make an offseason move.
