Teddy Bridgewater turned heads on Dec. 17 by teasing a return to the NFL. Nearly two weeks later, he is set to join a Super Bowl contender.

According to NFL insider Ian Rapoport, sources say that Bridgewater will come out of retirement to sign with the Detroit Lions. He will reunite with the 13-2 team as it tries to secure the top seed in the NFC, which would make the playoffs run through Detroit.
This season will not be the first that Bridgewater spends with the championship contender. He spent the 2023 season with the Lions and served as the backup to Jared Goff.
Bridgewater did not attempt any passes as the Lions went 12-5, won the NFC North, and reached the NFC Championship. The Lions ultimately lost to the 49ers, who represented the NFC in the Super Bowl.
The Lions now have two games remaining in the regular season. Next up is a rematch with the 49ers. The regular-season finale will be against the Vikings, the team that drafted Bridgewater back in 2014. Like the Lions, the Vikings are a contender for the NFC North crown and the NFC's top seed.
Of course, this will not be a long-term return to the NFL. Bridgewater already made it clear that he will head back to his alma mater after the NFL season ends so that he can try to coach his team to another state championship.
"We'll see how these next week-and-a-half, two weeks play out, might be signing with an (NFL) team, then returning to coach high school football in February," Bridgewater said on Dec. 17.
"That's the plan. My team knows that's the plan. We wanted to win a state championship and then coach go back to the league, see what happens and then come back February in the offseason, continue coaching high school football. We'll see how it plays out."
