The team announced the news with a brief statement on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, on Jan. 9.
"The Las Vegas Raiders have relieved Tom Telesco of his duties as General Manager," the statement said. "We appreciate his efforts in helping build a foundation for the future. We wish Tom and his family all the best."
The move to fire Telesco takes place two days after the Raiders fired head coach Antonio Pierce. The Raiders did not address Telesco's status with the team in the immediate aftermath of the Pierce firing. This created the expectation that the general manager would continue in his role in 2025. That situation has since changed.
Las Vegas hired Telesco in January 2024, mere months after the Los Angeles Chargers relieved him of his duties. Champ Kelly had been the interim GM for the final stretch of the 2023-24 season, but the Raiders passed over him in favor of Telesco.
The former Chargers executive made waves during his lone season drafting for the Raiders. He used a first-round pick on Georgia tight end Brock Bowers, who set multiple NFL records during his rookie season. This included the most catches by a rookie (112) and the most yards by a rookie tight end (1,194).
Telesco also landed several standout players in the draft during his 11 seasons with the Chargers. He was responsible for drafting such players as quarterback Justin Herbert, wide receiver Keenan Allen, and defensive end Joey Bosa. However, an 86-95 record with no division titles ultimately led to his firing.
With the Raiders firing the general manager, the team has another position to fill. Mark Davis and minority owner Tom Brady will try to find a coach and general manager who can work well together and get the Silver and Black back to playoff contention.
The duo will also aim to snap a turnover streak in the front office. The Raiders have featured three general managers and seven head coaches since 2012.
