Dwyane Wade is OK now but he clearly had come scary moments a little more than a year ago. That's when Wade says he had part of his kidney removed as the result of a cancerous tumor.

Wade is an NBA Hall of Famer who is best known for his days with the Miami Heat, the franchise with which he won three championships — one alongside Shaquille O'Neal (206) and two more with LeBron James and Chris Bosh.

Wade revealed the news about his kidney on a recent episode of his podcast, The Why with Dwyane Wade.

He said he had taken a few years off from seeing the doctor, but went in for a checkup after experiencing urinary and stomach issues. A body scan revealed the tumor. That was in December 2023.

"It wasn't something they could test unless they surgically removed it," Wade said.

He added that he sought multiple opinions from other doctors. Once they confirmed the diagnosis, he went ahead with the surgery, the idea being to make sure the cancer wouldn't spread to other parts of his body.

Doctors ended up removing 40 percent of one of Wade's kidneys.

Interestingly, Wade's former Heat teammate, Alonzo Mourning, needed a kidney transplant some time ago. He said he reached out to Mourning for advice.

"I think it was the first time my family, my dad, my kids, they saw me weak," Wade said. "That moment was probably the weakest point I've ever felt in my life. The moments that I was by myself, like I was struggling. Fortunately, I saw [my family] show up for me and be there for me, and in that process of my weakness, I found strength in my family, in my friends, in my group."
