Chip Kelly Explains Decision To Leave Ohio State For Pete Carroll, Raiders

Chip Kelly, a former NFL head coach, is making his return to the league as the Las Vegas Raiders' offensive coordinator under Pete Carroll in 2025. Kelly, 61, previously led the San Francisco 49ers in 2016 and has since enjoyed success as Ohio State's offensive coordinator, where he helped the Buckeyes win a national championship.

Speaking at a Wednesday news conference, Kelly expressed enthusiasm about reuniting with Carroll, emphasizing their shared vision for the team's future.

Known for his fast-paced offensive schemes during his tenure at Oregon, Kelly highlighted how his approach has evolved over time. Reflecting on his Ohio State experience, Kelly explained that while his offenses in college remained high-powered, the strategy involved more huddles and a slower tempo than his previous NFL systems.

"The game itself has evolved," Kelly said. "The number of snaps both at the college and NFL level are down, so you have to adjust."

While Carroll enters the season as the NFL's oldest head coach, Kelly, a former head coach with the Philadelphia Eagles and 49ers, was asked if he harbors aspirations of returning to a head coaching role. Kelly swiftly downplayed the notion, expressing satisfaction in his current role.

"I'm really excited to be here with Pete," he said. "I don't need to be a head coach again. I just really enjoy coaching."

With a 28-35 record as a head coach in his NFL career, Kelly remains focused on the present. His success at Ohio State, where the team averaged 35.7 points per game and won the College Football Playoff National Championship in 2024, fuels his confidence as he embarks on this new chapter.

He also cited the alignment within the Raiders organization, including input from GM John Spytek and minority owner Tom Brady, as factors that made the opportunity so appealing.
