Chiefs WR Rashee Rice Sentenced To 30 Days In Jail, Probation As Result Of Offseason Crash

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice was sentenced to five years of probation and 30 days in jail after pleading guilty to his role in a multi-vehicle crash earlier this year, the Dallas Morning News reported.

Rice, 24, entered guilty pleas to two third-degree felonies: collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing serious bodily injury, according to the Dallas County District Attorney's Office. He also paid more than $115,000 to cover out-of-pocket medical costs for the victims involved in the March crash.

The sentencing brings an end to the criminal portion of the case stemming from the high-speed incident, which took place along North Central Expressway during the NFL offseason and resulted in multiple injuries and vehicles damaged.

In a statement released by his attorney, Texas State Sen. Royce West, Rice expressed remorse.

"There have been a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages that my actions caused," Rice said, via The Kansas City Star. "I will continue working within my means to make sure that everyone impacted will be made whole ... I fully apologize for the harm I caused to innocent drivers and their families."

While the legal resolution marks a step forward, Rice could still face disciplinary action from the NFL. A league spokesperson told Pro Football Talk the matter remains under review. A suspension is expected.

The second-year Chiefs receiver was initially charged in April with one count of aggravated assault, one count of collision involving serious bodily injury and six counts of collision involving injury. Civil suits remain pending after four individuals were taken to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
