Houston outfielder Taylor Trammell found himself in the spotlight Thursday night after the New York Yankees asked umpires to check his bat.
The moment came in the ninth inning at Daikin Park, with the Astros trailing 8-3. Trammell ripped a double off the left field wall, but Yankees manager Aaron Boone quickly wanted a closer look at the equipment that produced it.
Umpires examined the bat on the spot and allowed play to continue, leaving Trammell standing on second base. Still, the bat did not return to the dugout. It was confiscated and taken for further review after the game.

The Yankees held on for an 8-4 win, but the investigation into Trammell's bat will be the lingering storyline. The 27-year-old outfielder, who has already gained attention in the past for his flashy bat flips, is batting .208 this season and has made only 44 appearances for Houston. He previously spent time with the Mariners, Dodgers, and Yankees before landing with the Astros earlier this year.
Whether this incident turns out to be nothing or something more will now be up to MLB officials. In the meantime, Trammell is the latest Astro to draw unwanted headlines about how the team swings the bat.
