Jets GM Darren Mougey says blockbuster trades were 'too good to pass up'

Jets general manager Darren Mougey said Tuesday's stunning teardown wasn't something he took lightly. But ultimately, he believed the offers were too strong to ignore.

Shortly after the trade deadline passed, Mougey met with reporters and addressed the two blockbuster deals that sent cornerback Sauce Gardner to the Colts and defensive tackle Quinnen Williams to the Cowboys. In return, the Jets landed a 2026 first-round pick, a 2026 second-rounder, two 2027 first-round picks, wide receiver AD Mitchell and defensive tackle Mazi Smith.

"It's never easy moving on from any player, let alone guys like Sauce and Quinnen," Mougey said. "You're set on what these values are, what they're really worth and these players and what you might be willing to do to part ways with them. We got to today and had these offers that we just felt were too good for the team, and we made that with Sauce and Quinnen."

Gardner signed a four-year extension this summer, but Mougey revealed the contract was structured with the possibility of a future move in mind. The timeline just sped up.

"It wasn't expected that it would happen this fast, but as we kept talking to Indianapolis those offers kept getting richer and richer in their value," Mougey said.

At 1-7, the Jets already had reason to start looking ahead. Now they've fully committed. The real judgment comes next — how well they use the haul they just collected to rebuild what's been torn down.
