Kyler Murray could actually return to Cardinals, but only with changes at top

The Arizona Cardinals are widely expected to move on from Kyler Murray this offseason, though one scenario could keep the quarterback in the picture a bit longer.

Some around the organization believe Murray could return if ownership opts for a full reset that includes a new head coach and general manager, according to Josh Weinfuss of ESPN. A fresh regime might be more open to giving Murray another opportunity, though it remains unclear how realistic that path is.

If Jonathan Gannon is dismissed, the assumption is that an incoming coach would prefer to handpick his own quarterback. The future of general manager Monti Ossenfort is also uncertain, leaving open the possibility of sweeping changes at the top.

Murray is no longer viewed by many as a franchise-altering player, largely due to injuries and inconsistent performance. His contract complicates matters further, with $36.8 million guaranteed for 2026, a figure that limits both Arizona's flexibility and his trade appeal.

While there could be some level of interest around the league, the Cardinals are not expected to receive meaningful value in return. The most likely outcome remains a separation, even if it is not fully locked in yet.

Veteran Jacoby Brissett is under contract for next season and could factor into the short-term plan. Arizona may still look to add another veteran as competition and as a bridge option while developing a rookie. Potential options include Teddy Bridgewater, Joe Flacco, Jimmy Garoppolo, Marcus Mariota, Malik Willis, Mitchell Trubisky and Russell Wilson.

Brissett's extended run this season provided the Cardinals with a long evaluation. The results were mixed. Arizona has just one win since he took over in Week 6, but he has ranked near the top of the league in volume metrics over that stretch despite operating behind an injury-depleted roster.
