The Cardinals announced the move on Monday, less than 24 hours after the Gannon-led team lost its ninth consecutive game. This dropped the team to 3-14 on the season and last place in the NFC West. The other three teams in the division all posted at least 12 wins and locked up spots in the playoffs.

The Cardinals confirmed in a release that General Manager Monti Ossenfort will remain in his role moving forward. He will provide assistance to team owner Michael Bidwell as the search for the next head coach begins.

Gannon, the former defensive coordinator for the Philadelphia Eagles, took the job in Arizona at the start of the 2023 season. He went 4-13 in his first season and 8-9 in his second.

He then entered this season with raised expectations. The Cardinals had some big names on the roster based on the past few drafts, such as wide receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and tight end Trey McBride.

The team failed to meet these expectations despite starting the season 2-0. Quarterback Kyler Murray only played in five games due to a foot injury, and he struggled while on the field.

Jacoby Brissett provided some production in his 14 appearances — 12 starts — while throwing for 3,366 yards, 23 touchdowns, and only eight interceptions. However, the team went 1-11 in this stretch. The Cardinals gave up at least 30 points seven times this season and at least 40 points four times.

Arizona, once a Super Bowl contender under Ken Whisenhunt, has only won the division three times since the 2000 season (2008, 2009, 2015). The team only has five playoff appearances in this stretch.

The Cardinals reached the Super Bowl in 2008 and the divisional round in 2009 with Whisenhunt leading the way. They reached the wild card round in 2014 and the NFC Championship in 2015 under Bruce Arians.

Kliff Kingsbury is the last coach to lead the Cardinals to the playoffs, doing so in 2021. The team lost in the wild card round after posting an 11-6 record and finishing second in the division.
