Johnson's wife, Irene, shared the news on Facebook, calling the loss devastating and unexpected. No cause of death has been released. She noted that Johnson had been dealing with health issues prior to his passing.

"It is with a heavy heart that I inform you that my husband, Tre' Johnson, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly," she wrote. "Our four children, extended family, and friends are devastated and in shock. We will miss him so much."

Johnson spent the bulk of his NFL career with Washington, playing from 1994 through 2000 and again in 2002. He also spent the 2001 season with the Cleveland Browns. A second-round pick out of Temple University, Johnson earned a Pro Bowl selection in 1999 and was widely respected for his durability and toughness in the trenches.

Listed at six-foot-two and 328 pounds, Johnson was a fixture on Washington's offensive line during the late nineteen-nineties, often lining up alongside franchise legends like Darrell Green.

After retiring from football, Johnson transitioned into education, becoming a history teacher in Maryland. His wife described him as a devoted father who loved motorbikes, French bulldogs, and life beyond the game.

Washington, now the Washington Commanders, released a statement following the news.

"We're heartbroken to learn of the loss of former Washington All-Pro guard Tre' Johnson," the team wrote.

Johnson is survived by his wife and four children.
