Padres Near Record-Breaking Sale After Family Feud Rocked Franchise

The San Diego Padres are nearing a sale that could reset the market, with billionaire José E. Feliciano and his wife Kwanza Jones closing in on a deal worth around $3.9 billion, per the Wall Street Journal.

This has been building for a while. Now, it looks like it's about to happen.

If it goes through, it would be the largest sale in MLB history.

That's a massive number. It would top the $2.4 billion that Steve Cohen paid for the New York Mets just a few years ago. Different level entirely.

But this story isn't just about money.

It goes back to what happened after the death of former owner Peter Seidler in 2023. What followed was a very public family dispute over control of the team, one that spilled into lawsuits and created uncertainty around the organization.

That tension never fully went away.

At one point, Seidler's widow challenged control of the franchise, raising serious allegations and trying to reshape the leadership structure. Eventually, John Seidler was approved as the control person, but by then, the idea of a sale was already in motion.

Now, it's close.

From the outside, the Padres have remained competitive, still chasing a World Series and keeping the focus on the field.

Behind the scenes, though, change has been coming. And if this deal crosses the finish line, it won't just be a new owner. It'll be a new chapter entirely.
