The accident happened Saturday night in Durham, North Carolina. According to officials (via The News & Observer), the teenager was riding a bicycle when he entered the path of Savarino's vehicle. The two were traveling in the same direction when the collision occurred.
The boy died at the scene.
Court documents state that Savarino told authorities he had been drinking earlier in the evening. He later registered a blood alcohol content of 0.11, above the legal limit of 0.08.
Savarino was taken into custody and later released on $100,000 bond. His driver's license has been revoked for at least 30 days, and he is expected to appear in court next month.
The investigation remains ongoing as officials continue to review the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Krzyzewski, widely known as "Coach K," built one of the most decorated careers in college basketball history during his time at Duke. He led the program to five national championships and became the winningest coach in Division I men's basketball before retiring in 2022.
