A spokesperson for the Orange County Sheriff-Coroner's Office said Anderson's cause of death was acute necrotizing pancreatitis, a serious condition in which part of the pancreas dies. His death was ruled natural.
Anderson passed away on April 16 at his home in Newport Beach, California after a medical emergency. He was 53.
Earlier, his wife had told ESPN she believed he suffered a heart attack. Officials later clarified the cause following their review.
The Los Angeles Angels announced his passing shortly after, calling him a franchise icon.
"Garret will forever hold a special place in the hearts of Angels fans for his professionalism, class, and loyalty," the team said in a statement.
Anderson spent the bulk of his career with the Angels, playing 15 seasons with the organization after being drafted in 1990. He made three All-Star teams and was a key part of the club's World Series championship run.
He also won the Home Run Derby in 2003 and later finished his career with the Atlanta Braves and Los Angeles Dodgers.
For many fans, Anderson was a steady presence during one of the most successful stretches in team history. Now, the focus turns to remembering both the player and the person.
