The seven-time Cup Series champion revealed the news while answering questions on Corey LaJoie's podcast, Stacking Pennies. He answered a fan question and said that the third full-time car will be the No. 84. This naturally led to another question about the car that Johnson will drive in the 2027 Daytona 500.
"We have the 13 reserved," Johnson said. "My partner at Knighthood Capital, his number is 13. My first win at California (Speedway) that we were just talking about, I go into the media center...first question from the media was 'How does it feel to win your 13th start?'
"I'm like, 'Son of a bitch. It was a good luck thing the entire time.' So, 13's the number."
The good luck comment referenced Johnson being a "numbers guy." He said that the number 13 kept popping up, and he felt that he was going to get fired and that it was bad luck.
However, the situation completely changed at the track closest to his hometown of El Cajon, California. He lined up fourth for the Cup Series race at California Speedway on April 28, 2002. He led 62 laps, including the final 14, and he scored his first of 83 wins. Six of these wins came at the Southern California track.
The No. 13 car was last in use during the 2024 and 2025 Cup Series seasons. AJ Allmendinger controlled this part-time entry during four Cup Series races in 2024. Shane van Gisbergen used it during one that same season. Will Brown drove the entry during the 2025 Chicago Street Race.
The car number has been active for 663 races throughout NASCAR history. Casey Mears controlled it for 227 races while driving for Germain Racing. Ty Dillon added 144 starts in the entry for Germain Racing.
